Success Story - Fred

We adopted our cat Fred from the WMASS 13 yrs ago. He was brought into the shelter at 6 weeks old and was 1½ when we got him. He was featured on the website and he had been there the longest out of any of the cats. Our home was quiet with only 1 other cat, no children and so we knew he could comfortably adjust with us. When we went to adopt him a little calico followed us around and climbed my leg every time we stopped. We took her home too! Mia was approx 3 years old when we adopted her and she was with us for 12 years..sadly she became ill and passed last year. She helped Fred adjust even more into our home, he was petrified of everything and hid for about 3 months until he started coming around and wanting attention. He is now about 14 or so and he is a huge MUSH cat...loves belly rubs and sleeping in the bed. He also loves kittens, we have had a few other cats and he gets along with them all. 11 years ago we went back to WMASS and adopted our 1 yr old husky dog Tess. She was a stray and had been at the shelter for 3 weeks. She has been Freds best friend, he followed her around and slept with her. We moved to Virginia to a small farm 10 yrs ago and Fred is our best mouser, when he comes home with a mouse or mole he howls to let us know and is excited to show us his trophy...he weighs about 15 pounds yet still plays like a kitten, bell balls or toy mice he loves. Tess also loved the farm life, she had freedom to run and loved sheep and cows. She was diagnosed with Cushings Disease in Feb 2010. The vet said she would possibly live another year on meds. Even with the meds was miserable on hot days. We made the decision to put her down and not let her suffer through the summer. Our vet is wonderful and he came to the farm to put her down, it was very peaceful. We buried her up on the hill. Fred misses her very much.

We are so glad to still have Fred and have given him a wonderful life. Since losing Mia and Tess we are ready to rescue another shelter prisoner and will be heading to our local ASPCA to see who may want a loving home. Maybe even adopt a kitten for Fred too :)

I appreciate what you all do at the shelter and wish you continued success!
