Zippy

I wanted you to get updated photos ASAP. He hid all day Sat., but we just pet him in the blanket. By Sun., my daughter was throwing toys for him and all he wanted was to rub up against us and be petted. He is a wonderful kitty. Talk to you soon.

Willie's New Friends

Two weeks ago I adopted 2 wonderful female tiger kittens to be playmates for my adult male cat Willie.  I must admit I was a bit nervous as you never know how well cats will take to one another.  I am happy to say it was only 2 days before Willie and his girls become best of friends.  They eat together, play together, and share all of the MANY kitty toys scattered throughout the house.  Willie is such a good big brother.  He even caught a big cricket and gave it to the kittens as yet another kitty toy.  Willie has become a kitten again and just loves his new friends.  So this is a very happy ‘tail’ for Willie, Wylie, and Willow.  (NOTE:  The kittens are from a litter which was hand raised and are soooo friendly.  Unfortunately I could not take their brother Chucky who is still at the shelter.  He is absolutely adorable and equally as friendly.  Whoever adopts him will be very lucky.  Check out the web site under ‘Just Cats’ for Chucky. He is the first one listed.  It broke my heart to have to leave him behind.)

Baby

We lost our dog of 13 1/2 years in June of 06.to cancer. Her name was Shoney. It was a terrible heart break. My 21 year old son is leaving June 20th 08 for Iraq. He has been wanting a dog for about a year now. I was not ready to take that step. He begged me to think about it before he got deployed.
I moved to Hewitt a year ago. It has been lonely without my little girl around the house. On Wednesday May 28 I was driving around the area and saw a sign for The West Milford Animal Shelter and thought to stop. Although the shelter was closed there were 2 ladies working on the grounds who took me over to see the dogs. And that's where I saw Baby. It was love at first sight. My son and I came back that night to see her in person. We were both in love. We took her home on the 29th not knowing much about her except she has the sweetest face ever. We surprised my 15 year old son and he too is in love with her. After Shoney who was an exceptionally good dog I never thought lightning could strike twice. I was wrong. Baby is amazing. We all feel so blessed to have her in our home.
I want to give a special thanks to Dolly who helped us at the shelter. Baby is all you said she was and more. Sweet, cute and full of love. Thank you all so much for our new little girl.

With love Christian, Terance & Helle T.

Cleo

Hi, Just wanted to tell everyone at the shelter how Cleo is doing. I put my other cat that I had for 11 years to sleep in Jan 08 and did not think I would get another cat. I started looking on shelter websites- just to look- and saw Cleo featured and fell in love with her. I decided to go meet her and ended up adopting her the next day.
She is an awesome cat. I am glad I could adopt an older cat that most people would walk by and give her a good home. I attached a couple of pic's so you could see her now. The one on the cabinet is the day I brought her home and the other one is her in her kitty bed.

Thanks Again!

Marshmallow

We just got our rescue shue today, his given name is Marshmallow, but we will likely change that. He's a wonderful, loving cat....he LOVES to purr and makes biscuits like crazy!! i think he must have been a pastry chef in a different life :) (Karin, know any good Austrian names for those??) Here are a couple of pics i took tonight, on his first night in our home. He is in the isolation bedroom--he likes the down duvet (it's nice and squishy) and the dresser (he can see outside the window from it). It's been a busy but fun day knowing he was coming. Our other kitties know he's here but aren't too anxious about that, thankfully. He's a very mellow guy and thanked me many times for having a welcoming, comfortable home for him. What an honor it is for me to do this for him!!

Toby

Hey Everyone,
I wanted to give you all an update of Toby (formerly Woody). He is doing great adjusting to
my family. He is such a joy to have around. He has an amazing personality, everyone jokes
and says he thinks he is a dog, because he loves to play fetch with this rope toy that my
boyfriend made for him. And we got him this great kitty tower and he loves currling up into
a little ball on top of the tower, and sleeping in the sun. Toby also gets along great with our dog Tink, I sent a picture of them together also. They love to run around and play all day long in the living room. They have so much fun together. Toby is doing really great and just loves everyone. Thank you all so much for this amazing kitty.

Willy

Wanted to send you some updated pictures of Willy (aka Wil). He became attached to both me and my husband very quickly! We couldn't keep him separated from us and our dogs for more than 2 hours the day we brought him home. He adjusted so quickly and I give all the credit to the wonderful people at the shelter. He loves my dogs and I am convinced he thinks he is one of them.

Every morning I open our front door so he can sit outside on our screened porch and lay in the  sun. The day after we brought him home he started following the dogs around and copying  everything they do, of course all the dogs wanted to do was play with him (look mom a toy that moves on his own!). But after a few good swats and hisses they learned to stay away until Willy was ready to be friends with them. That took all of 4 days he now gets very upset if he can't see the dogs or hear them, he cries and moans.

He likes to drink the dogs water from the raised feeder, and when its

time to let the dogs outside he comes running right along with them. Willy

LOVES to play fetch, yes fetch! You throw his toy he picks it up and brings

it back, drops it and waits for you to throw it again. We have never owned

a cat before and are just so thankful to the people at the WMAS who made

Willy the kind of kitty that he is today!

Aiden

We were asked to provide an update regarding the latest addition to our family -- Aiden !! As you know, Aiden joined our family late last year from the West Milford Animal Shelter, and has integrated very well.

Aiden is becoming used to a more "normalized" existence and routine (outside the shelter routine that he has known for most of his life). He is a passionate and possessive animal that has warmed up to the both of us. He has been to the Vet and has received his boosters and shots, and also has his West Milford Dog License -- # 2972.

Now that winter is over, we have started the installation of fencing around the entire back yard to allow Aiden some additional room to exercise. (he loves to chase squirrels and rabbits!!) Attached are a few photographs of Aiden in his new environment.

Our thanks to the shelter and to the Society for saving, helping, and mending Aiden from his injuries -- and saving him for us.

Our special thanks to Frank Yevchak who worked so lovingly and selfishlessly with Aiden to help make him something special.

Congratulations for having such a kind and dedicated staffer.

With our thanks.

Picasso
Picasso wanted to say hi to all his friends at WMAS and let you know how his first day went. Picasso has adjusted really well. I was expecting him to hide for the first couple of days but within an hour he was playing and sleeping on my lap, he is really happy cat.

Thank you.

Wayne, Jackie & P.

PS. All your animals were in good health and well cared for, your facility was clean and your staff was friendly and helpful I would recommend your shelter to anyone looking to adopt a pet.

Cleopatra

My family and I adopted Cleopatra ( who you had named Lady) Cleo for short, in May 2000. She has to be the best dog ever!!! Cleo is a beagle/sheltie mix who is amazing with people, kids and other dogs, we brought her brother home from BASS in 2001 and added 2 legged brother in 2004 than another 4 legged brother in 2005 and this past November another 2 legged brother and as she has done so many times she greets her new family member with a kiss.Cleo has allowed me to foster dogs as well and whenever we bring in a new guest she shows them around and teaches them the rules. Cleo loves to spend her days going on walks and sunbathing. She has brought so much joy to myself and my family.

Thank You for saving her for us.

Fondly,

Lisa S. & Family

Romel

It's been probably a year and a half since we adopted our dog (Rommel) from your facility, and I just wanted to say that we absolutely love him. He was a handful when we first got him, and it took me all summer of staying home to break him of his separation anxiety but we managed to do it (thank goodness).  Now he's a wonderful companion to all of us and we love him very much.

Thanks for taking care of him before we came in to adopt him.  Keep up the good work!!!

Lexus

I just wanted to thank you all for being so helpful with the adoption of Lexus (who is now referred to as simply Lex). Her first day was full of exploring but within a few hours she was climbing on everyone who came to see her in her new home.

She slept right next to me for the first night and now follows me everywhere I go.  She seems to have calmed down quite a bit (no biting!) and in a matter of days turned into a VERY loving, affectionate animal.  I am so glad that I found her she's exactly what I was looking for and she's very entertaining.

Again thank you for all your help as it is much appreciated!

Thanks!
Janine K. (Newfoundland)

Captain

Hi Folks,

Here are some photos of Captain. I really have to thank you folks he has made our home a happy place. He is the best dog that I've ever had ! Some people say shelter dogs are other peoples headaches waiting to become your headache. Well they should meet Captain! housebroken, well mannered, and oh so lovable! A better dog could not be had for all the money in the world.

Thanks

Norman - now Apollo

Update #1: Do you recognize this man?????  He did great his first night w/ us.  He did not sleep very much which is totally understandable.  He seems very happy to be here with us.  We picked a winner!!!!

Update #2: Hi. Just wanted to keep you up to date with Norman Apollo Paradis. He is doing well, and enjoying playing catch in the back yard, 2 square meals + snacks daily, and unlimited hugs, kisses and random, but abundant, belly / neck and base of the tail rubs. Obedience training starts next week, and I think he will pass with flying colors. We'll keep you posted. All our best.

Update #3: We just wanted to let you all know that Apollo is doing fabulous. We are so thankful to have found him. He was definitely was made of sugar and spice and everything nice. We can not say enough about him....he is so affectionate, funny, well behaved, smart and good natured. My husband and I are looking forward to our first Christmas with Apollo. He will have many gifts under the tree. We truly hope that all of your other tenants find as loving homes as Apollo has with us. They all deserve nothing less. We plan on bringing him in for a visit with you this holiday season. We will surprise you!

Thanks,
Jeanne & Dave P.

Love and Affection

Sadly after 17 years,  we had to put our tabby cat Samantha to sleep.  We picked her up from WMAS in 1989.  She was our first cat and slept by my side every night for most of those years.  She would come running to me almost every time I called to her and loved to sleep on my lap..  We have another cat from WMAS from 5 years ago who I know misses Sam…  will see you soon for another.

Thanks for giving us a Cat filled with love and affection,

Ken & Linda

Mending Our Hearts

On the night of July 14th 2006, my husband and I had the most unpleasant experience. With no choice left we were forced to have our beloved cat, named Kitten, who was rescued from a garbage can by my husband in the winter of 1989, put down due to old age, after 18 years of attachment.

Having been the first time either of us was faced with this unpleasant task, the pain we felt that evening was far beyond imagination. We both cried like babies. The very next day, we went to the WMASS and adopted a beautiful 7 month old cat, known to them as Wendy. She is now called Shania.

Even though, the night before, my husband had said that he probably would not be ready to have another cat for a while, the immediate adoption of Shania the very next day helped so immensely with the pain that we felt the night before that words can never explain it. Hats off to the WMASS!

Thank you, more than you will ever know.

Sincerely,

Dan & Eileen D

Learning to Love Again

LAST SEPT WE LOST OUR LAST CAT AT AGE 17, POPCORN; HER SISTER HAD DIED IN APRIL 2005 AT AGE 16, AFTER HAVING CATS ALL OUR MARRIED LIVES, WE KNEW WE JUST HAD TO CONTINUE AS THE HOUSE WAS SO EMPTY WITHOUT THEM. I COULD NOT DO SO RIGHT AWAY SO WE WAITED UNTIL AFTER NEW YEARS.

GOING TO THE SHELTER, WE FELL IN LOVE WITH "WILMA" WHO HAD A HEARING PROBLEM AND TILTS HER HEAD.  WE TOOK HER HOME AND SHE TOOK OVER OUT HOME AND OUR HEARTS. SHE WAS PLAYFUL AND SEEMED SO HAPPY TO HAVE A FAMILY AGAIN. THE NEXT SAT WE RETURNED FOR OUR SECOND CAT AND MET "BEATRICE", WHO WOULD LET ME PUT HER BACK IN HER CAGE AFTER I HELD HER, SO SHE PICKED US AND HOME SHE WENT TO JOIN, THE FIRST ADOPTED CAT WE NAMED "BUTTONS"", WE DID NOT KNOW WHAT TO EXPECT AS THEY WERE NOT SIBLINGS' WELL AFTER ABOUT 1 HOUR OF HIDING, THEY SNIFFED EACH OTHER, I GAVE THEM FOOD AND THEY ATE RIGHT NEXT TO EACH OTHER  AND BECAME BEST BUDDIES.  WE NAMED HER "BINGO".

THEY LOVE EACH OTHER, SLEEP AND EAT TOGETHER AND PLAY WITH TONS OF ENERGY.  WE ARE VERY HAPPY WITH BOTH OF THEM AND THEY ARE VERY AFFECTIONATE AND WELL BEHAVED CATS TOO. WE KNOW WE WERE NOT TRYING TO REPLACE THE CATS WE LOST, BUT WE KNEW WE COULD LEARN TO LOVE OTHER ONES AGAIN AND WE HAVE.

Coby

My friend was telling me about a lot of dogs that came into the shelter about 3 years ago. Five Dachounds and two Shih-tzu's one was about 2 years old and the other one was a puppy. They were dropped off by two men that were told to get rid of them by their landlord.

Lucky for me I went to the shelter to see Coby and he was all skin and bones he had a cyst over his eye and his hair was very thin and dry looking. I couldn't leave him behind so I adopted him. Although he has a marking problem I decided to get some belly bands and keep him. He has gone to obedience classes and he is sooo sweet. He loves my husband and sleeps next to him and can't wait until he gets home at night. He waits at the front door with a toy in his mouth for us to get home when he hears our car pulling into the driveway. Even with his marking problem I would never part with him he is so appreciative of everything and so cute too!

Thank you for letting me tell my story.

Joan K. (Hewitt, NJ)

Cista

Thank you for giving my Junior a beautiful Cista. Junior was at the time 15 years old and was losing his kitty playful antics, so I thought another cat would spice up his old life. Well, at first he was a bit insulted that I bring another cat into his home as he was the only one for 15 years, then he started to like her, now he loves her! I recommend bringing home a playmate for any cat at any age. It could extend their life.

Since then, I came back for another playmate...........you should see how they all cuddle up together............it is so sweet.

THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU

Janet....West Milford, NJ

Duchess

I adopted Duke (the dog) from the Parsippany Animal Shelter about 4 years ago. He did not "play well with others" - dogs, but I had promised my daughter that when we moved to West Milford I would buy her a kitten. I was concerned about how the pets would get along, but when I took the kitten home she did NOT want to stay in a separate area for more than three days. We carefully introduced them, and lo and behold, Duke rolled over on his back while the kitten walked right up to him to sniff his nose!!! That's when we named her Duchess.

The two of them have been INSEPARABLE since then, and when I took Duchess in to get fixed last week (like a good owner), Duke was SO unhappy...several times on the carpet. Now that she is back, he is being very good again, and they are very happy together.

Hallmark Card for Duchess
Dear Duchess,

I've heard that you've been fixed
That must have really hurt
You must really hate me
I feel like such a jerk

I am sorry for your loss
And what I've put you through
But you will thank me later
When Tom's don't bother you

You won't be having kittens
Perhaps you can adopt
But you were out of control
And needed to be stopped

Maybe you'll stop jumping
the dog when he walks by
And sharpening your claws
on the outlets...were you ?&*?

This is one of those times
I'm glad I'm not a cat
Maybe in my next life
You'll get to pay me back

My thoughts are with you,

Serenity

Hi,I just wanted to send to you my appreciation for our adoption of “Jessica” last night.  We will be giving her a new name “Serenity”, because she is such a loving, calm, peaceful soul.

Our 1st night together went well. She seemed to have adjusted very well for the first night. She ate some food, used the litter box & drank some water. She had a room of her own which we spent about 1 ˝ hrs. with her before retiring to bed. Slightly introduced her to the dog, but initially a small confrontation (nothing harmful) just some growling from the cat & the dog very anxious to see the cat, but chose to make that meeting at another time. Woke up this morning & went to see her and she came right to me in the morning. We decided to take her out of the room & bring her into our living area, only this time I held her in my arms upon her next meeting with our dog. This went so much better!!

The dog wasn’t so anxious & the cat felt safe enough to barely growl at the dog. They even met face to face without to much discomfort for the first time. I think in a few more days of slowly making this introduction they will get along just fine! Like anything, it takes patience, and getting used to new surroundings. She has such a pleasant personality & will fit into our home environment in no time, along with Blaze, our dog. She is truly a wonderful addition to our family & I am very grateful for your help in adopting her. I also want to thank you for the wonderful cat carrier you had given to me. I really do appreciate that gift.

I will keep you updated on her progress over the next week, but I think she is going to do just fine! We love her! She is a sweetheart & a blessing.

Thank you so very much!

Sincerely,
April B., Tjory & Blaze & now “Serenity”

Rosie

I adopted Rose in March of this year.  Her name slightly changed to Rosie.  She is the sweetest cat! What a love.  She will sit for hours  on end just to be pet.  Our other furry family has adapted pretty well.  Hector a 8 year old tabby (looks exactly like Rosie, but larger) is her buddy.  Our two dogs, Tank and Codi still cause some friction here and there, but they are adapting well.  Our daughter is 20 months old and is always calling I see Osie.

THANK YOU!!! She is a great addition to our family!

Londa, Timothy and Brandi D.

My Boy Moose

I adopted a 4 month old male older kitten 3 years ago from you. He is the love of my life. I named him Moose due to the size of his paws at the time. He grew into his name. I wish i had a way to show you a photo of him but have no means to do so.

My life shortly after adopting him became unraveled. I had to sell my home, and find a new place for Moose and I to live. We moved to another county and settled in. He has been my friend through out the move although he due to his size broke out of the cat carrier on move here. He lays by my feet and snuggles with me during the cold months this past winter.

I have always had cats and dogs but Moose is my life line. He is an indoor only boy. I purchased a fish tank to keep him amused while i am at work. He is not in the least bit interested in the fish. His only interest in the fish is when i am admiring them. I believe he is jealous of the attention i give them.

At any rate Thank you for giving me my boy. If and when i can afford a home of my own i will gladly adopt a dog or cat from your very friendly staff.

Again, I thank you.

Romeo

Dear West Milford Animal Shelter - Thank you so much, we adopted Shadow a 2 year old cat " new name is "Romeo".

In January of this year, we are so happy with him and would just like to thank you. As you can see he is right at home with us and his new brother Rainer.

Thank you,
Roger & Penelope

Dude

Good Day, I'd like to thank you for introducing me to my best friend. I adopted a Beagle named Chet in March 2004. His new name is DUDE! He loves being outside in the backyard sniffing for cats and chasing birds. During the spring and summer, he enjoys spending time in the sun. We have a park bench in our backyard that he lays on for hours with his water bowl next to him.

He knows a few tricks. The "Butt Dance" is when his tail wags so hard, it makes his butt shake side to side. He can jump onto or over my back for a treat. "Find It" is when I hide a treat or his ball and he's got to use his hound skills to find it. And the basic sit, up, down, stay commands. I constantly have to buy new toys for Dude because he destroys them all. Except for Trigger, a stuffed giraffe that has survived since April. He can destroy a baseball in 40mins and a small stuffed animal in 20mins. But when I give him bones, he hides them in the backyard for a rainy day.

We had a great summer together. I had a custom made shoulder/bookbag style carrying bag made for him so I can transport him on the NY subway. Although he gets car sink (but loves to stick his head out the window) he loves being on the train. There's an opening on the top of his "ByeBye Bag" where he can sit up and people watch. From May to early Oct., Dude joined my girlfriends and I for our weekly Saturday Brunch at outdoor cafes in the city. In August, we drove down to the coast of N. Carolina for the weekend. Dude does not like the ocean but he like digging in the sand.

In Oct., I picked up a stray dog in my neighborhood (Dude found her). A shepard/chow mutt, she now belongs to my roommate, her name is Dolly. Dude's playfulness has increase with having her around. Having Dude is the best thing that happen to me in 2004. My spirit are so high because of him. No matter what, his tail is always wagging when I get home. I love him and spoil him unconditionally.

Sam and Kitty

Dear West Milford Animal Shelter -  Thank you!!! I went to your shelter this summer to adopt a new cat. One of our beloved cats died in June and the cat that survived was in a deep depression. I walked in your door, "just looking" with my 4 1/2 month old baby in-tow. Well, we walked out of your shelter with two new additions to our family - Sam and Kitty.

I asked for a cat that would be good with children, and the volunteer showed me two kittens that she had personally hand-raised (the mother cat was killed when they were two weeks old). Sam and Kitty are very good cats - they are very people-oriented and purr like crazy. I sometimes think that they believe they are human. They are gentle with my daughter who is now 9 months old - and can get a little aggressive with them. Sam and Kitty are both very tolerant of my daughter mauling them on a regular basis.

I am glad, too, that I chose to adopt two kittens instead of one. They are the perfect companions to one another - they can almost always be found sleeping on or near each other. Our adult cat warmed up to them quickly, and occasionally will be found napping with them.

Our family is lucky to have such wonderful kittens - thank you.

Mariah

We adopted Mariah the Beagle in September of 2002.  She had a neglectful and maybe abusive past before she came into our lives.  Separation anxiety and other issues including not knowing how to play came along with her.  We were baffled and saddened that a dog would not know how to play or wag their tail...such a natural response that puppies are usually born with!

But what a dog she is now!  With alot of training (with a professional who specialized in abused dogs), love and patience...she blossomed into a wonderful part of our family!  1 year later, we are so in love with her that we cancelled our honeymoon...bought an RV and took Mariah with us!  Mariah has come such a long way and she is a completely different dog!  She's now a seasoned camper & couch potato, loves to play with her stuffed toy ducky, car rides and is very spoiled from her Grandma & Grandpa!

The love that you receive from a rescued animal is like no other.  They know...maybe with time...that you saved them.   My husband & I always say that there is a part of us that feels like Mariah also saved us.  She made us want to be a family and to be together with her unconditional love.

I cannot stress enough how much we love her and we thank the West Milford Animal Shelter for letting us be owned by our Beagle !

JoAnn & Mike D.

My Boy Sunday

Dear Animal Shelter,

I was adopted from your shelter last year, in May, I thought you'd like to know how I am doing. My new Mom named me Sunday for two reasons, first she adopted me on a Sunday and also b/c of my markings, I look like a butterscotch Ice Cream Sundae.

I am doing very well. I get so much love and attention from my Mom and Dad. They think I am beautiful.

I have a very big cage in the cellar for when the weather is very hot or very cold. There is an outside cage for the nice weather and also a 'rabbit run' where I can jump around. Of course I spend time sitting on the couch with my Dad. He gives me a back rub!

When I was brought home, I was surprised to find seven other bunnies living here already. We all have our own cages so we can see each other and not get lonely. My favorite food is parsley. Thank you for keeping me until I found my new home. I have also sent you a check donation so you can buy treats for the other animals at the shelter.

Love, Sunday B

My Boy Snowball

Dear West Milford Animal Shelter Staff,

On Feb. 4, I adopted a cat, Snowball, from you.  She is one of my most wonderful, dearest friends.  She helps me sleep better at night and makes me laugh at her antics during the day! Thank you for allowing me this great pleasure in Life!

Sincerely,
Kelly V
